March 6, 2008 -- Native Houstonian and well-respected litigator, Alexandra Smoots-Hogan received over 220,000 of the popular vote in Tuesday's Texas Primary. Accordingly, Ms. Smoots-Hogan is the Democratic Nominee for Judge of the 164th Judicial District in Harris County.

"I am very encouraged by the turnout of Democratic voters during Tuesday's Primary," said Smoots-Hogan. "I hope for the same energy and level of turnout during the pivotal November elections."

Smoots-Hogan is part of a slate of well-qualified Democratic Judicial Candidates poised to bring about sweeping change to the make-up of the Harris County Judiciary. The slate of Democratic Judicial candidates includes attorneys of varied legal experience levels, ethnic background, gender, and sexual orientation.

"It has been 10 long years since the people of Harris County have seen a Democrat on the bench," said Smoots-Hogan. "The people are realizing that having a judiciary of varied ideals, experiences and perspectives is essential to the prosperity of our County."

Prior to the Primary, Ms. Smoots-Hogan was endorsed by most of the prominent Democratic elected officials and several organizations, including The Houston Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Caucus, Houston Black American Democrats, and The Harris County Tejano Democrats.

In meeting with several voters leading up to Tuesday's primary, Ms. Smoots-Hogan learned of the voters' dissatisfaction with politics as usual. "Voters are looking for leaders with fresh perspective and genuine responsibility to the people of this County," said Smoots-Hogan. "I am prepared to bring a high level of respect and professionalism back to the bench. Based on my working knowledge of the day-to-day operations of our Courts, it is imperative that we restore the public's confidence in fair and balanced judiciary that can appreciate the circumstances felt by members of our community today."
